S. Gardner Riel began working in Gerontology in 1977 as a Certified
Nursing Assistant. She went on to earn a Bachelors
Degree in Psychology from Liberty University, and a Master’s Degree in
Mental Health from University of North Florida, as well as a Certificate
in Aging Studies.
Ms. Riel has worked with indigent elderly mental health patients living in
the community. Working with all types of community-based Medicaid
programs, and working creatively, she was able to attain the various
services needed to assist her clients.
In 1993 she developed an award winning Corporate Information and Referral

elder lives, is necessary. She has served several Fortune 500 Corporations
as their eldercare information service provider.
Ms. Riel is an adjunct professor at Jacksonville University teaching
courses on Gerontology and Social Work. She has managed a home health care
company - and has worked with Medicare, Medicaid, and Private staffing.

planning a variety of rehab choices for elders in Northeast Florida. Ms.
Riel has served two terms as a Florida State Long Term Care Ombudsman.
Serving in this capacity, Ms. Riel has visited virtually every Assisted
Living and Nursing facility in Northeast Florida.
In 1993 she initiated and orchestrated the ‘Partnership for the Arts’, an
event that assisted elders in attending cultural and culturally diverse
concerts and events with Jacksonville University and other area
businesses.
Ms. Riel has served as an Executive Board Member of the Northeast Florida
Alzheimer’s Association. She has written for several publications,
including the Florida Caregiver Magazine, on topics regarding balancing
